Surgery
When surgery is needed, my preference is to use the least invasive approach that will effectively treat the problem. I have particular expertise in laparoscopic gynaecological surgery and tailor the surgical plan to the individual patient, including fertility considerations where relevant.
Laparoscopic surgery
Minimally invasive surgery uses small incisions and a camera to perform procedures that might otherwise require a larger abdominal incision. Where appropriate, this can mean less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to normal activity.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy
Hysterectomy can often be performed laparoscopically rather than through an abdominal incision. The most appropriate approach depends on the reason for surgery, previous operations, uterine size and other individual factors.
Endometriosis surgery
Surgery for endometriosis is tailored to the extent of disease, symptoms and reproductive plans. More complex disease can involve the bowel, bladder or urinary tract and may require coordinated surgery with colorectal or urological colleagues.
Fibroids and fertility-preserving surgery
For women who wish to retain their uterus or preserve future fertility, myomectomy may be an alternative to hysterectomy in selected cases. The best approach depends on the size, number and location of the fibroids, as well as future pregnancy plans.
Ovarian surgery
Ovarian cysts can often be treated laparoscopically, with an emphasis on preserving healthy ovarian tissue wherever appropriate.
Is surgery the right option?
Surgery is not automatically the best treatment. My aim is to make the diagnosis as clear as possible, discuss the non-surgical and surgical options, and recommend surgery only when the likely benefits justify it.
